(I am) old enough to remember what happened in the 1960s when the left-wing took to the streets and somehow the media glorified them and it ended up shaping policy. We can’t allow that to happen

Rep. Peter King (R-NY) talking about #Occupywallst

Basically saying, “Too many people got too many rights during the 60s, and as rich white men we can’t allow that to happen again”

-Joe

We’re talking about a democratic awakening. We’re talking about raising political consciousness, so it spills over; all parts of the country so people can begin to see what’s going on through a different set of lens. And then you begin to highlight what the more detailed demands would be, because in the end we’re really talking about what Martin King would call a revolution; a transfer of power from oligarchs to every day people of all colors, and that is a step-by-step process. It’s a democratic process, it’s a non-violent process, but it is a revolution, because these oligarchs have been transferring wealth from poor and working people at a very intense rate in the last 30 years, and getting away with it, and then still smiling in our faces and telling us it’s our fault. That’s a lie, and this beautiful group is a testimony to that being a lie.

When you get the makings of a U.S. autumn responding to the Arab Spring, and is growing and growing—-I hope it spills over to San Francisco and Chicago and Miami and Phoenix, Arizona, with our brown brothers and sisters, hits our poor white brothers and sisters in Appalachia—-so. it begins to coalesce. And I tell you, it is sublime to see all the different colors, all the different genders, all the different sexual orientations and different cultures, all together here in Liberty Plaza; there’s no doubt about it.

Cornel West, interview. Democracy Now!, 29 September 2011

A good response to people who keep demanding that the OWS protestors draw up some sort of platform of demands. That rarely happens in the early stages of liberation movements. At the moment, it’s about raising the consciousness of everyday Americans who have thus far accepted the notion that the U.S. is a democratic, fair, and equal society. It may be a strange notion to most Americans, but our country is one that—like the countries involved in the Arab Spring—is crying out for a democratic revolution.

Some people say that Occupy Wall Street might not get anything done and that it would have to be some more boisterous/violent demonstrations, but even that is true, you have to start somewhere. The people can’t revolt if they’ve forgotten that they can.

Russell Simmons: I will bring hundreds of thousands to ‘Occupy Wall Street’ | Raw Replay

occupytheplanet:

Hip hop magnate Russell Simmons said Thursday on MSNBC that he planned on joining the ongoing “Occupy Wall Street” in lower Manhattan.

Simmons, who has an estimated net-worth of $340 million, noted that all his employees paid more taxes than he did.

“Last time I got involved in a protest I brought a hundred thousand people there, for the Rockefeller Drug Laws,” he said. “And if I get involved really heavily in this one, we find the agenda and have a common ground… we can bring hundreds of thousands of people… small seeds are planted, but it could grow into something very big.”

my only problem with Occupy Wall Street (thus far):

itsyourhomegirl:

it’s still ”non-violent.” even after obvious police brutality, harassment, and excessive force.

I’m gonna quote some Malcolm X right quick:

“So I cite these various revolutions, brothers and sisters, to show you that you don’t have peaceful revolution. You don’t have a turn-the-other-cheek revolution. There’s no such thing as a nonviolent revolution. The only kind of revolution that is nonviolent is the Negro revolution...Revolution is bloody, revolution is hostile, revolution knows no compromise, revolution overturns and destroys everything that gets in its way.“

-Message to the Grass Roots, 1963

can someone remind me when was the last successful “non-violent” revolution?

I don’t think it will continue to stay completely peaceful if it grows.

Police pen up and mace female “Occupy Wall Street” protesters

In a disturbing scene from today’s “Occupy Wall Street” protests, a group of peaceful female protesters were rounded up in an orange-colored mesh pen by police and subsequently sprayed with mace without any provocation.

In spite of multiple reported incidents of possible police violence, major media outlets seem to be content to let the protests go by completely unreported, following the same “who-cares” attitude they have taken toward recent revelations that the NYPD has violated the Constitutional rights of American citizens by spying on them as possible terrorists and enemies of the state despite a complete absence of evidence of any crimes.

This is absolutely disturbing. Penning people up to mace them is police brutality. Period. What will it take to get the mainstream media to pay attention? If you follow the #OccupyWallStreet, you’ll find out that at least 80 were arrested today. AP and Wall Street Journal mentioned the arrests briefly today.

wowwww

Annnnd this is exactly why I decided to GTFO of there. Call me a pansy deserter but they were fucking people up all over Union Square today. I’m afraid of what’s gonna happen tonight, as Zucotti Park is surrounded by 100+ cops right now.

This needs more notes. Sick.

PASS THIS ON! PEOPLE NEED TO SEE AND BE AWARE! DEMOCRACY DOESNT EXIST WHERE MARSHALL LAW FLOURISHES!

A young man of color arrested in Union Square earlier today doing literally nothing but crossing the street.

I am fucking shaking with anger. This video shows Union Square earlier today. Clearly there is a protest but the area immediately surrounding the guy with the camera is just observers and people milling around. Watch the guy in the red shirt. From the vimeo link:

As you can see at around 0:30, a young man in a red shirt, Glenn Daniels Jr, is walking near the sidewalk with hundreds of other protestors. The crowd was attempting to cross the street to continue the march south down Broadway from Union Square. Daniels is peacefully walking with a water bottle, not committing any crime. At 0:35 he is approached by an NYPD officer and pushed towards the sidewalk. At 0:38 a senior police officer in a white shirt quickly approaches and grabs Daniels and another young man with a beard and backpack. The lighter skinned man is let go, but Daniels is arrested. The remainder of the video shows NYPD officers cuffing and detaining Daniels.

Unbefuckinglievable. He’s doing fucking nothing.

Oh this is bullshit. This is fucking BULLSHIT! WTF! WTF! WTF! I CAN’T EVEN! AT ANY TIME PEOPLE OF COLOR CAN JUST BE TARGETED AND TAKEN!

THIS IS AMERICA!

THIS IS WHO WE ARE.

THIS.
